Define learning analytics and detail types of insight they can provide to educators and learners

Assessment 1.1 Week 01

Learning analytics is becoming defined as an area of research and application and is related to academic analytics, action analytics, and predictive analytics.

It will help us to track and understand:

1. Data trails such:
  • Sentiments
  • Attitudes
  • Social connections
  • Intentions
  • What we know
  • What we learn
  • What we might do next

2. Information
3. Data mining
4. Analytics

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about students to improve:

  • Their environments
  • Social interactions
  • Learning content
  • Different spaces
  • Learning systems
  • Intervention and adaptation

A key application of learning analytics is monitoring and predicting students’ learning performance and spotting potential issues early so that interventions can be provided to identify students at risk of failing a course or program of study (EDUCAUSE 2010; Johnson et al. 2011).
